Green Resolutions for 2009

My Mom and I were talking about our New Year’s Resolutions.  We’ve learned alot this year – alot about ourselves, about how we want CG Kidz to be.  Our family does alot to be “green” but we’ve done it for a while.  We change out our lightbulbs, we never buy plastic water bottles, we changed out all of the plastic in our house to reusable.  When I take my lunch to school it’s 99% zero waste, we recycle when we know it’s going to the right places!  We remind each other all the time about things – mostly it’s me reminding my family but I am aware.  One of the biggest things we do is to watch what we buy and what it’s made of.  We try really hard to buy products that are only recycled or made from things that can be recycled and won’t be bad for the earth.  We all just need to do a better job in my opinion.  What are you doing?

So here’s my New Year’s Resolution… I am going to do better to live a “zero waste” life.  I’m not perfect but I’m going to really try and do it to help my parents too.  I’m also going to try one that my Mom says is A BIG ONE.  I’m going to post a “Green Tip” every day, for 365 days… now I didnt say they wouldnt come 5 at a time but my goal is 365 tips for living greener!  What’s yours?

Meet the Greens!

My mom says there are a few times in your life when some really cool things happen to you. For sure, my recent trip to NY was one, but another is I got to be interviewed today by MEET THE GREENS! Woo hoo! If you dont know who Meet the Greens is go to their website www.meetthegreens.org. They are a great website for kids to learn about being more green but my favorite characters are Izz and Dex. They are so funny and talk about things like the 3 R’s, check out their Smelly episode! Hilarious.

What did you do green today?

CG Kidz on CBS!

It was incredibly cool to be on the news in NYC last week!!  My mom and I visited the Alain L Locke school in Harlem and donated their very first Green Club in a Box.  What is that?  It’s a box full of TONS of stuff like project ideas, recycled note pads/pens and a bizillion ideas on how they can turn their school and homes green.  We even taught them how to make Candy Cane origami for their Christmas tree and the best part – we gave each kid a CG Kidz reusable water bottle to get them started.  We can’t wait to visit there again next year and see how it’s going.  Take a moment to check out the video!

Welcome to the NEW CG Kidz Blog!

WOW welcome to the new CG Kidz blog!  I am so excited to share all the cool stuff we’ve been doing and now have a place to really see all of your comments on kids going green and your great stories.  Remember, if you’re not a kid age 5-15, please don’t post on this blog and kids, we just ask that you use your first name only and don’t put personal information on this blog for your security.  Please also get your parents permission to post on CG Kidz.

So here’s what I’m talking about this week:

1.  Our visit to the incredible Alain L Locke elementary school in Harlem – we presented them with their first ever environmental Club in a box!  AND the cool teachers, Vicki and Tim from Gibson Island Country School came all the way from Maryland to be there to help them get things rolling.  Pictures, video, etc coming this week!!

2.  “Green” stocking stuffers for Christmas!  Tell everyone you want a reusable CG Kidz water bottle for your stocking this year.  Why?  It’s reusable, made from stainless steel which is safe and is BPA free.  Know what BPA is?  I’ll talk more about that soon.  I’m just learning alot about it myself but it’s not safe for any of us kids to drink from plastic water bottles.

3.  Does anyone know how long it takes ONE PLASTIC WATER BOTTLE to decompose in a landfill?  I do – DO YOU?  If so, tell me.
