Earth Day is Coming! What will you do?

Earth Day this  year is April 22, 2009.  It’s a really important day, this year, more than ever.  I got involved in my local Earth Day chapter with my parents because I feel really strong about helping out and it’s a great cause.  I’m even going to do some public service announcements because I really want to get the word out to other kids to do something.  Get involved in your community however you can.  Even if it’s volunteering to help with a clean up project once in a while.  You can do it.  If I can – you can and I’m 12 years old!  We aren’t too young to have a voice in our school and community.

At my school, our green team is planning a BIG celebration.  We are handing out leaves to everyone as they come into school that day and asking them to write down ONE THING they plan to do to make a change and help with recycling, reducing or reusing.  Then we’re going to make an ENORMOUS tree mural with them as a reminder for everyone and to show our support.

I think it’s so important that everyone know just one simple thing can help.  We have started a great recycling program too which I’m proud of.  AND the kids on my green team are organizing to plant a tree or two on that day too as well as clean up our school grounds.  These kids have really become involved and learned to have a voice.  I’m really proud to be a part of the CMSN Green Team.  Thanks Mom for leading us and all you do.  No one could do this without you.

What will you do this Earth Day?  For more information on how to get involved in YOUR local earth day – visit www.http://www.earthday.net/earthday2009  If you’re in Arkansas you can learn more about volunteering at www.arkansasearthday.org – WE NEED LOTS MORE KIDS!!

All About Trees

Thanks To Tara Paterson, CynerGreen blogger for this really cool post about trees!

Teaching children to care for the earth is vitally important to the future of our planet. Here are 10 tips to share with kids about why trees are an important part of their everyday lives.

  • Trees provide us with the material to make furniture and build homes.
  • There are lots of different foods we eat that come from trees like- bananas, nuts, syrup, spices, apples, coconuts and many other fruits.
  • Trees provide us with shade to cool us when we are hot.
  • Many useful things come from trees like bags, paper, boxes, kleenex and many more items.
  • Trees produce the oxygen both people and animals need to breathe. This is why protecting the rainforest is so important to our future.
  • Trees provide entertainment; they are fun to climb!
  • Trees teach us about the cycle of life; each spring we see the birth of new leaves and each fall and winter we see the leaves fall and go into dormancy.
  • We use wood to build fires to keep us warm and some people use fire to make their food and boil their water.
  • Trees provide ingredients to make common things like shampoo, soap, cereals, tires and many other items.
  • Trees act like filters to keep our air clean. It’s never too early to teach kids how to care for the earth and all of the beauty she gives to us each day. When a child understands the importance of something like a tree, it makes it much easier to care for and nurture all that the planet has to offer!

Green Tip #6 – Putting the pieces together

I love this “reuse” idea.  My Mom and I had some fun with this over Christmas.  You know those old puzzles you don’t use anymore – use them to create stuff with like a TREE!  Look at this idea I found from the Elmers people.  We actually used some to decorate a picture frame as well.  Another great way to REUSE.

Green Tip #3 Help, the water is running!

Okay, here’s an easy one.  Don’t let the water run when you brush your teeth or wash your hands.  Turning off the water when you don’t need it can save ten gallons or more each morning.  Also, ask your parents to put in the kinds of faucets that help conserve water.

    Green Resolutions for 2009

My Mom and I were talking about our New Year’s Resolutions.  We’ve learned alot this year – alot about ourselves, about how we want CG Kidz to be.  Our family does alot to be “green” but we’ve done it for a while.  We change out our lightbulbs, we never buy plastic water bottles, we changed out all of the plastic in our house to reusable.  When I take my lunch to school it’s 99% zero waste, we recycle when we know it’s going to the right places!  We remind each other all the time about things – mostly it’s me reminding my family but I am aware.  One of the biggest things we do is to watch what we buy and what it’s made of.  We try really hard to buy products that are only recycled or made from things that can be recycled and won’t be bad for the earth.  We all just need to do a better job in my opinion.  What are you doing?

So here’s my New Year’s Resolution… I am going to do better to live a “zero waste” life.  I’m not perfect but I’m going to really try and do it to help my parents too.  I’m also going to try one that my Mom says is A BIG ONE.  I’m going to post a “Green Tip” every day, for 365 days… now I didnt say they wouldnt come 5 at a time but my goal is 365 tips for living greener!  What’s yours?
